Questions to ask your wedding photographer

Your big day is getting closer, and everything is falling into place. So, keep calm and let the wedding countdown begin! You’ve already put so much effort and hard work into preparing for this day, and an absolute must is to make sure to have all the special moments captured to save for the wedding album. Remember, the photographer you choose will be there by your side for a large part of your day. Of course, the best choice would be someone you feel comfortable with, can communicate with and can trust to take shots that will be meaningful to you. When it comes to choosing your wedding photographer, there are certain things you’ll want to be properly informed about. Usually, you will have the chance to meet with your wedding photographer before the wedding day, which would be the perfect moment to make any queries you may have. In case you are not sure what you should be asking, here are some important questions to ask your wedding photographer:

Questions to ask your wedding photographer

How long have you been in wedding photography business? Do you have any reference or reviews?

This is an important question to ask your wedding photographer in order to know how much experience your chosen photographer has. At the end of the day, you want someone who will not crack under pressure or tire out after a few hours on his feet.

Would you require a list of shots we would like?

When asking this question to your wedding photographer, look out for whether he takes into consideration the details that are most meaningful to you.

A photographer who immediately replies “No” to this question should raise some red flags-there should be a fine line between him being open to communicating and collaborating with you, and him requiring you to trust him completely and blindly.

Of course, you need to be able to trust the photographer to allow him the freedom to catch the moments, but most photographers will welcome a shot list to make sure you get the specific pics you want.

If you’ve had the chance to have a preview of their previous work however, try not to overwhelm them with too many requests or demands — if you hire a good pro, you’re hiring them for their eye as well as their experience creating amazing albums. Try not to worry too much, you can trust them to do their job.

Do you have a portfolio I can review?

Why should you ask this question to your wedding photographer? A photographer’s style is reflected in their portfolio. This will give you an idea of what they will be able to contribute towards the pictures they will be taking in terms of style, creativity, fun and originality.

While reviewing the pictures, look out for the photographer’s style-does it match your own? The idea here is to pay close attention to what the photographer captured. This will show you how creative the photographer is and whether he is the one for you. Look for images that you can see yourself in, and that tells your own story. Think of three words that describe you and share those with your photographer. You’re counting on their knowledge of art, lighting, posing, and creativity to create images that fit your vision.

Talk to your wedding photographer about whether you want traditional wedding portraits (posed group photos), or more relaxed natural photos, or if you fall somewhere in between and would like a blend of both.

Questions to ask your wedding photographer

Will you be the photographer shooting on my wedding day?

If not, you should ask to meet the photographer who will be shooting, so you can address your concerns and queries with him rather than someone who will not actually be present on your wedding day.

      Do you have backup equipment?

Cameras are mechanical devices, and just like any other device of the kind, they can fail at any moment and without warning, usually at no fault of the photographer. It is therefore important to make sure that your wedding photographer has a full set of backup cameras, lenses and flashes.

How many hours coverage will I get? What is the charge for extra hours?

In case your wedding runs longer or later than planned, you can be aware of any potential extra charge.

How many photographers will there be?

Having a second photographer means that you’ll get twice as many photos and get those fun, unpredictable shots, like the groom’s face when he first sees his bride and the other can photograph the bride as she walks down the aisle. Should there be no second photographer, does the wedding photographer have a backup photographer? That will cover the eventuality that the photographer falls sick or cannot otherwise make it on your wedding day.

An assistant’s job is to ensure that every shoot runs smoothly, to prepare and check the set or location and make sure all equipment is available, clean and working. An assistant can also help with poses, change lenses, hold a reflector to create the best possible light and even keep children entertained during photo sessions, all of which gives the wedding photographer more time to focus on shooting your wedding day.

While some photographers offer this all-inclusive, it would be good to find out however if having any of the above comes at an additional cost.

How long will it take for the pictures to be ready?

Managing expectations is key to any successful vendor partnership in your wedding. Your photographer is going to need to take some time to edit your pictures, so confirm clear time frames for when and how you will receive your images.

Understandably, you’ll want to see some photos ASAP, and the wait can be pretty agonizing! If you know in advance, you can manage your expectations better.

What will you be wearing on the day?

The wedding photographer and his team usually want to blend in and match the style of your wedding. It would therefore be good to let him know what the theme and style is, and if you would like him to dress accordingly.

Will you require us to provide food and refreshments?

A question that is most often overlooked. Your wedding photographer will be on his feet for the most part of your wedding day, so it would be great to have him taken care of with drinks and a solid meal in between the wedding shoots. A little goes a long way!

Will you provide a written contract?

Always make sure you get everything, including your terms and conditions in writing. You should also include the name of the photographer and the exact fees, so that no additional fees pop up after. Do not deal with any potential vendor who does not offer you a written contract.

How much of a deposit is required to hold the date? When is the balance due? What forms of payment do you accept?

Asking means you don’t risk the chance of losing your wedding photographer to another client who may have booked them on the same date.

It is also good to find out when full payment is due, and to make sure you meet the deadline for it. Surprisingly, some clients expressed a lot of satisfaction and excitement with the photos that were delivered to them, but failed to make payment on time.

So, do you like the potential vendor?

When choosing your photographer, personality should be a major determining factor. You’ll be spending your entire wedding day with this person and if you’re at ease, you’ll not only enjoy yourself more, but they’ll also get better shots.

Remember, anyone can take a good picture every now and then. But when you’ve only got one chance to capture life’s biggest moments, you better make sure the person behind the camera is a pro.
